SMAILHOLM CHURCH

Sensitive church conversion into a family dwelling

For centuries Smailholm Church has sat at the heart of village life in the Scottish Borders. Whilst its social function has ended, its longstanding identity and historical importance in the village remains, also sharing a connection to two well known historical figures, Sir Walter Scott and Captain James Cook. Our designs are for a sensitive conversion of the Church into a 4 bedroom dwelling on its elevated site, repairing the existing building and carefully retrofitting the existing fabric to greatly improve energy performance and sustainability. Our ambition was for minimal intervention in the external fabric, focusing on retaining key historic features and characteristics to create a series of spaces that feel gentle, warm and calm.
