stenton studio

The brief for this project was to create a art studio space for each of our clients within a new garden pavilion. The building was also to include a shared living space connecting the studios and a wc.

The proposals are for a simple mono-pitched roof form which nestles into the North-East corner of the site, contained by the existing garden wall.

The studios have been designed to maximise views out over the private garden space to the South, bringing light and warmth into the building. Clerestory windows along the North gable provide even North light in both artist studio spaces and create a sense of privacy from the adjacent road.

The construction approach was for a building that touched the existing garden lightly, with a structure that rests slightly above ground level on minimal pad foundations. The proposal is overtly contemporary in its design using corrugated, pre-weathered steel sheet to echo nearby agricultural and ancillary buildings, with the oxidised surface of the pre-weathered steel complimenting the red sandstone and pantiles typical to East Lothian. Black-stained vertical larch cladding is proposed under the roof canopy to the South to create a softer, more tactile surface within this sheltered exterior space.
